On July 29, the area surrounding the Polish Securities Printing House (PWPW) in Warsaw will be turned into a street battlefield. This historical reenactment will inaugurate the 62nd anniversary of the 1944 Warsaw Uprising.
Stronghold PWPWwiI1 be staged by the Zgrupowanie Radosław historical group and the Polonia Militaria Foundation. Enthusiasts of historical reenactments—organized historical groups, scouts and actors—will reconstruct the attack by Warsaw insurgents on the German-held Securities Printing House. Sanguszki Street and Zakroczymska Street will be cordoned off by barbed wire. A SdKfz 251 Rossi carrier, an Opel Blitz truck, a Sahara motorcycle and possibly a SdKfz 222 carrier will be used to recreate the battle. Nearly 30 people will take part in the fighting on the Polish side and around 50 on the German side.
During the German occupation of Poland, the PWPW building housed the German Staatsdruckerei, a printing house that produced Nazi banknotes called “młynarki”, which were in circulation in occupied Poland. The management of the printing house was German, but the staff remained Polish. A Home Army (AK) unit was established here under the name PWB/17. Its commander was Major Mieczysław Pełka” Chyżyński. For the purposes of the resistance movement, the Polish personnel used to replace sheets of Nazi banknotes with false ones.
The attack on the printing house was part of the insurgents” plan to capture the Old Town. It was carried out on Aug. 2, 1944. The building was attacked by soldiers from Captain Gozdawa”s Battalion, the l04th company of the Association of Polish Syndicalists and the Wigry Battalion. The PWB/17 combat group launched an assault from inside the building.
The printing house was captured, then held and defended for 26 days. The post was kept in order to help insurgents defend the entire Old Town and New Town neighborhoods. A German counterattack reduced this shell marks can still be seen close to the building.
To mark the 62nd anniversary of the Warsaw Uprising, the Warsaw municipality and the Warsaw Uprising Museum have also prepared many other events.
As well as official ceremonies to be held in places of national remembrance, there will be open-air masses and musical concerts commemorating this important historical event.
