Stefan Lewandowski (39)

Stefan Lewandowski was born on 10 April 1929 in Warsaw. In 1942, he took up work at a locksmith workshop at Leszno Street near the Kercelak marketplace. He did not take part in the Rising as a soldier, but accompanied his 2 years older brother, Senior Rifleman Karol Lewandowski "Karolek" from the "Żniwiarz" Group in Żoliborz, with a camera. He left Warsaw among civilians, travelling via the transit camp in Pruszków, and reaching the town of Potok Wielki in the Świętokrzyskie Province, where he worked on a farm. He returned to Warsaw after the war, and graduated from the Municipal Mechanical Middle School at Targowa Street and later worked at workshops of the Municipal Transport Company. He lives in Żoliborz.

During the Warsaw Rising, Stefan Lewandowski, then aged 15, took 39 photographs on 6x9cm negatives with his Rolleicord twin lens camera. In images of the area of Bytomska Street, Czarnieckiego Street and his home at 34/36 Mickiewicza Street, he depicted soldiers and medics from the "Żniwiarz" Group, his older brother Karol as well as some civilians - colleagues and neighbours.
