Stefan Rassalski was born on 26 December 1910 in Symonów, Volhynia Province, in the eastern bordelands of the II Republic of Poland.  He received artistic education as a painter and graphic designer at the Higher School of Painting and Drawing in Lublin and the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, and theoretical education in the field of philosophy and history of arts at the Catholic University of Lublin and the University of Warsaw.  In the 1930s he was a co-founder of regional museums in Lublin and Łuck, the art group "Krąg", and took part in numerous exhibitions. During the German occupation he joined the underground in the ranks of the Military Service for the Protection of the Rising (Wojskowa Służba Ochrony Powstania, WSOP) and operated in a secret laboratory at the Warsaw Polytechnic. Starting from December 1939, he conducted secret education classes in hand drawing and descriptive perspective at the Warsaw Polytechnic, and in printing and editing techniques at the secret School of Journalism. As a member of the Home Army, Rassalski carried out a number of tasks in the Polytechnic's laboratories such as overseeing the production of weapons, means of communications, and false ID documents, including for people of Jewish descent. After the capitulation of Warsaw in October 1944, he was sent with other civilian residents of Warsaw to the transfer camp in Pruszków, from which he was released as unfit for work and the sole guardian of his son. After the war, he was actively involved in the work of the Capital Reconstruction Bureau, the editorial staff of the Stolica weekly, and the Urban Planning and Architecture Committee. A graphic designed and painter, Rassalski was also the author of numerous articles on the theory of arts and architecture, and a member of the Association of Polish Artists and Designers and the Association of Polish Journalists. He died on 17 November 1972 in Warsaw.
