Witold Edward Koneczny (98)

Witold Edward Koneczny was born on 25 October 1905 in Armavir, Armenia. He grew up in Warsaw. In 1928, he received a diploma in aviation engineering at the University of Michigan, after which he returned to Warsaw. In March 1939, he, his wife Estera Backman, a US citizen, and son emigrated to the United States, where settled in the State of Virginia near Washington. Up until 1973, he worked for several US government bodies, including the Federal Aviation Administration. In 1962, he represented the USA the negotiations with the USSR on the first Aeroflot flights between Moscow and Washington. He died on 24 March 1974 in the United States.

A collection of nearly 80 slides by Witold Koneczny shows the life of the Polish capital in the 1930s as seen through the eyes of an ordinary Varsovian – a passer-by and participant of important events. In addition to images of squares, architecture and monuments, the author photographed military parades, sport events, including the Gordon Bennet Cup in ballooning, and everyday life of the city. Some of his most unique photos include a series of images of the funeral procession of Marshall Józef Piłsudski on 17 May 1935.
