FIRES (336)

Black and white photographs cannot fully render the impression that the glows of fires and plumes of smoke rising above the fighting city must have made. They were held in the memories of those who had survived the Rising as a horrifying and heartbreaking sight. An attempt to do that was made by Adam Tomiak, who painted some photos taken by his son Edward with red ink.  The photos show numerous firefighting actions actively assisted by women and children passing buckets with water. There are also images of the fire of the PAST building on 20 August. Well documented by Eugeniusz Lokajski and Joachim Joachimczyk, the successful assault involved the use of a motor pump with which the insurgents drowned the interior of the building with a mixture of oil and petrol, which was subsequently ignited, forcing the Germans to abandon their positions.
