”Warsaw the great city” - the album of Warsaw destroyed in 1939

The album was created by an unknown author and is an incredibly unique firsthand photographic account of a besieged Warsaw in September of 1939 and the first three months of the city functioning after the city’s capitulation.

The album contains 114 photographs (mostly they are prints on postcards), and several images had been cut out of the press. The authors of some of the photographs are Sylwester Braun and Jan Rys- who were known for their extensive documentation of the first months of World War II in Warsaw. Several photos had been taken by Edward Fikus- presently practically forgotten photographer, who also took many heart wrenching photos of the destroyed city. The rest of the photographs remain unfortunately the work of anonymous creators.

Generally the concept of the album is reminiscent of other photo albums created in Warsaw during the beginning stages of World War II, documenting the dramatic course of the defense of the capital and the scale of the destruction caused by German bombing and artillery fire. However, such albums usually only contain a collection of photos with brief captions. The one that is currently presented is additionally supplemented with extensive commentary from the author; in some cases, they are direct confrontations of official German propaganda. This gives it an incredibly personal character, creating an emotional report from the city that faced the German invader for four weeks.
