Japan discovers the story of Warsaw 1944

The exhibition “Warsaw. Phoenix from the ashes” by the Warsaw Rising Museum was open for the public in Yokohama on 5 September 2025! The event started with the screening of the film about the heroic WW2 fighting in Warsaw (2014, directed by Jan Komasa).

We are grateful that since 2023 thanks to our exhibition, 15,000 people in Japan have already had a chance to learn more about the story of Warsaw in 6 Japanese cities, namely Hiroshima, Osaka, Sapporo, Tsuruga, Tokio and now in Jokohama (till 4 November 2025).

The opening ceremony took place in the Kanagawa Plaza for Global Citizenship (Earth Plaza) in the presence of Jan Ołdakowski – Director of the Warsaw Rising Museum, Michihiro Wakisaka – representing the Kanagawa Prefecture and Tomasz Gwozdowski – Deputy Ambassador of Poland to Japan.

Having the honour to participate in today’s event, I dare say that memory about the Warsaw Rising participants shall not perish with the passing of the last one and the heart of Warsaw, the city doomed to annihilation, shall never cease to beat. As well, the heart of Yokohama is beating still though the city was dramatically destroyed twice in the past century. However, the people brought it back to life, to make it even stronger. JAN OŁDAKOWSKI, DIRECTOR OF THE WARSAW RISING MUSEUM

Yokohama is the second biggest city in Japan and knows well the term of “rising from the ashes” though much different than the one we know from Warsaw’s history. In 1923 a massive earthquake led to almost total annihilation of the city. Due to the effort of the inhabitants, the city was reborn just in 6 years. Then, because of heavy bombing, 42% of the city was severely destroyed in 1945.

Kanagawa Plaza for Global Citizenship (Earth Plaza), where the exhibition is being presented, is an institution that encourages the global community to reflect on and understand international affairs as well as spread peace in the world.

I am convinced that thanks to this exhibition, the Poles and the Japanese, will have an opportunity to learn more about our countries, understand the past and build common future on our respective experiences. TOMASZ GWOZDOWSKI, DEPUTY AMBASADOR OF POLAND TO JAPAN

“Though we dream of peace there are many ongoing military conflicts and wars in the world. In Ukraine, although many efforts are undertaken to start negotiations for ceasefire, peace remains dim. Many civilians are suffering and the humanitarian crisis gets only deeper”, said Michihiro Wakisaka, Director for the Global Strategy at the Kangawa Prefecture.

Living in peace is our common dream. Today we learn about the suffering inflicted on the Poles, which cannot be forgotten and about the story of their perseverance to rebuild their modern city after all these difficulties. MICHIHIRO WAKISAKA, DIRECTOR FOR THE GLOBAL STRATEGY, KANGAWA PREFECTURE

The exhibition is open till 4 November 2025. Admission free.
