Exhibition “Der Warschauer Aufstand 1944” in Berlin

On 27 July 2026, the exhibition “Der Warschauer Aufstand 1944”, prepared by the Warsaw Rising Museum, was opened at the Rotes Rathaus in Berlin. Visitors can see it until 4 September 2026.

The exhibition “Der Warschauer Aufstand 1944” is being presented in the representative spaces of the Rotes Rathaus in Berlin from July 20 to 4 September 2026.

On 27 July 2026, an official opening took place, attended by representatives of the Berlin authorities, the Warsaw Rising Museum, the Embassy of the Republic of Poland and project partners.

We are presenting the exhibition at a particularly meaningful time, just as the commemorations of the 82nd anniversary of the Warsaw Rising begin. On this special occasion, we wish to reflect deeply on the events of August 1944 and to bring their course and profound significance to an international audience.

The exhibition further aligns with the 35th anniversary of the Berlin–Warsaw city partnership and the signing of the Polish-German Treaty on Good Neighbourly Relations. It serves as a powerful symbol of the shared path toward lasting partnership and deeper mutual understanding.

Almost 82 years ago – from 1 August to 2 October 1944 – the Polish Home Army rose up in Warsaw against the German occupiers. These courageous men and women fought for freedom, for the liberation of Warsaw after almost five years of Nazi tyranny. Despite fierce fighting and resistance, the Warsaw Rising was brutally crushed after 63 days. It ended with countless lost lives and a destroyed city. The exhibition on the Warsaw Rising of 1944 commemorates these days – and at the same time makes clear how important a culture of remembrance is in both countries. We want to further strengthen the connection between Germany and Poland, between Warsaw and Berlin. This year’s anniversary is special for yet another reason – this year we also mark 35 years of the partnership between Berlin and Warsaw. That is why the opportunity to present the exhibition in the Rotes Rathaus has a particular significance, as we can jointly preserve the memory of the soldiers of the Polish Underground State and the residents of the city who, on 1 August 1944, rose up to fight for their freedom and that of their homeland. About “Der Warschauer Aufstand 1944”

The exhibition “Der Warschauer Aufstand 1944” presents the history of Warsaw during World War II — from pre-war life, through German occupation, terror, the functioning of the Polish Underground State and the Warsaw Rising, to the reconstruction of the city after 1945. It consists of over 70 exhibition panels, three display cases with original artefacts, and a screening of the film “City of Ruins”.

Rotes Rathaus in Berlin – a Place of Particular Importance

The Rotes Rathaus is the official seat of the Mayor of Berlin and the Berlin Senate. Hosting the exhibition in this iconic historic building highlights the exceptional importance of the project and the profound significance of Polish-German cultural cooperation and dialogue on history.

Exhibitions on the Warsaw Rising Presented to the German Public to Date

The exhibition “Der Warschauer Aufstand 1944” has been presented in Germany since 2014. This year’s edition is the third presentation in Berlin and the eighth in Germany overall — evidence of the enduring cooperation between the Warsaw Rising Museum and its German partners.

It is dedicated to the dramatic fate of Warsaw during World War II and the Warsaw Rising. A donation for Museum's expansion

The Warsaw Rising Museum will receive a donation from Villum Foundation, part of the VELUX foundations, which has decided to support the Museum’s expansion with a grant of 24.5 million Danish kroners (approx. 13.8 million PLN).

Travel in Time: From Warsaw to Italy

After the end of World War II, many Polish POWs liberated from Nazi German Stalags and Oflags decided to join the 2nd Polish Corps led by Gen. Władysław Anders in Italy. Former participants of the Warsaw Rising were no different. Many chose to continue their fight, hoping that all was not yet lost.

Zbigniew Leszek Grzywaczewski is the author of 33 photos that depict the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. He was a Polish firefighter who sneaked his camera into the Ghetto to document the agony of the Jewish district of Warsaw in April and May 1943. One year later he took part in the Warsaw Rising (1 August 1944 – 2 October 1944). What is his testimony?
